Magdalena Baczewska

Magdalena Baczewska

pianist, harpsichordist
Born in Poland, Magdalena Baczewska [baCHEVska] has enjoyed a multi-faceted career as a pianist, harpsichordist, educator, recording artist, producer, and an administrator, currently serving as Director of the Music Performance Program and Lecturer in Music at Columbia University. The press describes her as a “world-class” musician (The American Record Guide), and a “player of taste and admirable sensitivity” (Palm Beach Arts Paper). Her performances have been praised as “eloquent & technically flawless” (The Washington Post), “highly sophisticated and truly admirable” (The Weekend, New York). She has performed with the San Francisco Symphony, China National Symphony, and Macao Symphony, among others. She has appeared in concert with violinist Joshua Bell, as well as with maestro Tan Dun, with whom she has enjoyed an extensive collaboration. Magdalena has toured Europe and the US with double performances of Bach’s Goldberg Variations, which she performed twice in one evening, on the harpsichord, then on piano. This has not been done since Rosalyn Tureck’s 1977 double-bill performance at Carnegie Hall. Magdalena has also performed throughout Europe, China, and the US, appearing in Carnegie Hall (NYC), Davies Symphony Hall (San Francisco), National Center for Performing Arts (Beijing), Guangzhou Opera House (Guangzhou), Shenzhen Polytheater (Shenzhen), and Salle Cortot (Paris), among others.

Magdalena is a laureate of international piano competitions (Chopin Competition at the Kosciuszko Foundation, Dorothy McKenzie Recognition Award, Prix du piano Ecoles d’Art Américaines Fontainebleau, Grand prix European American Music Alliance Paris), as well as the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Polish Minister of Culture. Baczewska holds Bachelor and Master’s degrees from Mannes College The New School for Music, under the tutelage of Jerome Rose, and her doctoral degree from Manhattan School of Music, in the studio of Constance Keene. Her doctoral dissertation, In Search of Bach’s Cantabile: The Role and Aspects of Oratory and Singing in Keyboard Interpretation was published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing.

An avid educator, Magdalena has given piano master classes in the Central Conservatory (Beijing, China), Grassland International Music Festival (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia); International Keyboard Institute and Festival (NYC); New York Piano Festival (NYC), The New Music School (Chicago, IL), Charleston Southern University (Charleston, SC), among others. She has been invited to conduct piano master classes at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts. She is a full-time faculty member of Columbia University and visiting professor at Accademia Europea Villa Bossi in Varese, Italy.

Magdalena uses Remote Lesson Yamaha Disklavier technology in her teaching, frequently giving piano master classes remotely. She has worked with students from Microsoft School of the Future (PA), Elon University (NC), Hartt School of Music (CT), to name a few. She also volunteers teaching music appreciation online to Virtual Senior Center through Selfhelp, Inc. As a keen learner, Magdalena has also pursued Post-baccalaureate Studies at Columbia University’s School of Professional Studies.

As Artistic Director of BlueSleep Music, Magdalena produced music for MetroNaps EnergyPod®, popularized by Google. Her best-selling albums Music for Dreams were conceived with BlueSleep®, a medical team specialized in research and treatment of sleep disorders.

Her recently released album, containing works of Chopin and Szymanowski (Paraty), and has been applauded for its “imagination and spontaneity” (Jan den Kruijiff, Musikalifeiten), and “magnificent, unique voice” which “stylistically never falters“ (Donald Isler, Classical Music Guide Online).

Magdalena is a Yamaha Artist.
