Zwieńczenie tegorocznej edycji Chopin in The City w chicagowskim Copernicus Center było prawdziwym świętem muzyki i sztuki wokalnej.

The Magic of Voices and Emotions – The Grand Finale of the IX Chopin in The City Festival

The closing concert of this year’s Chopin in The City at Copernicus Center in Chicago was an unforgettable celebration of music and vocal artistry. Three extraordinary artists – Dee Alexander, Urszula Dudziak, and Grażyna Auguścik – came together to create a breathtaking performance that captivated the audience with passion, virtuosity, and boundless improvisation. The concert’s centerpiece was the repertoire from the album “To i Hola”, originally released in 2000 and reissued on vinyl in 2024. This remarkable record blends Polish folk traditions with jazz expression and classical influences, giving traditional melodies a fresh and modern interpretation.

The audience was treated to mesmerizing performances of “Dwa Serduszka, Cztery Oczy” and “To i Hola”, where folk melodies were reimagined through masterful improvisations and innovative arrangements. The trio’s voices intertwined beautifully—Auguścik’s warm and velvety tone, Dudziak’s avant-garde vocal acrobatics, and Alexander’s soulful phrasing formed a rich tapestry of sound that transported the listeners to another dimension. Their performance effortlessly balanced delicacy with intensity, tradition with contemporary influences, creating a dynamic and deeply emotional musical experience.

The festival’s grand finale was a testament to the power of music when performed by artists of extraordinary charisma and sensitivity. Dee Alexander, Urszula Dudziak, and Grażyna Auguścik proved that their artistry transcends genres, seamlessly merging diverse musical worlds into one organic whole. This was an evening that will remain in the hearts of the audience for a long time—filled with beauty, passion, and artistic magic. The standing ovation said it all – absolute respect!

2. Metropolitan Jazz Octet (MJO)

featuring:
 Jim Gailloreto-saxophones
Ben Lewis-piano
The Metropolitan Jazz Octet (MJO), founded in the 1950s by saxophonist-composer Tom Hilliard and later revived by Jim Gailloreto and John Kornegay, carries forward a vital piece of Chicago’s jazz heritage. Blending the sweep of a big band with the intimacy of chamber music, the Octet transforms arranging into an art of color, texture, and surprise.
For this program, MJO collaborates with acclaimed pianist Ben Lewis to reimagine two of Chopin’s celebrated piano works. Chopin’s music, rich with lyrical melodies, chromatic daring, and rhythmic flexibility, has long resonated with jazz musicians. Though he never wrote jazz, his spirit of improvisation and ornamental freedom feels strikingly modern, offering fertile ground for reinterpretation.
Through contemporary, masterful treatments, Lewis and MJO recast Chopin’s musical poetry into vibrant soundscapes pulsing with a jazz heartbeat. The program also features original octet compositions by Kornegay and Gailloreto, bridging tradition and innovation in equal measure.
Impromptu in A-flat major—one of Chopin’s most cherished shorter works—reveals his flair for brilliant figuration and lyrical expression.
Prelude in E minor, steeped in Romantic intensity, conveys immense depth of emotion.
Quandary is a contemporary jazz waltz with complex harmonies and rhythms. The title describes a musical dilemma: which motifs to use or toss?
No Man’s Land is a post apocalypse adventure. The music conjures images of twisted rubble, desolate landscapes, and the heroes that struggle.
