“Chopin IN the City” is a celebration of the life and genius of Frederic Chopin displayed in a rich program of concerts, presentations, film screenings, and music workshops, aimed at audiences of all age groups and backgrounds. The program will showcase a wide range of forms and styles of music including classical, jazz, and world music – all integrating Chopin’s compositions.
The focus of the festival, is to promote the music of Frederic Chopin, among devoted followers, and to raise awareness of his musical genius among audiences who may not be familiar with Chopin and his musical compositions.
The organizers aim to achieve this by bringing Chopin’s tunes to various neighborhoods, and nontraditional performance spaces around the city. This includes not just the communities of Polish heritage, but general populations of the city as well.
From an educational perspective, showcasing Chopin’s artistic achievements and the life he lived, will bring a broader historical context when focusing on the era in which he lived and worked.
Although Frederic Chopin remained loyal to the core influences of the Polish folklore in his compositions, he also had an unparalleled ability to go beyond this comfort zone, and demonstrate his versatility by incorporating the influences of new environments including that of his life in France.
The “Chopin IN the City” festival will take place around the time of the composer’s birthday between February 22 – March 1, 2017. Events will be held in performance spaces around Chicago, including the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland, Piano Forte Foundation, University of Chicago, Loyola University, Green Mill Jazz Club, WFMT/WTTW , WDCB, Constellation, Chicago Poetry Foundation, Polish Museum of America and the Frederic Chopin Polish School in Palatine.
The music festival will showcase renown Chicago-based performers including Grażyna Auguścik, Ani Gogova, Jarek Gołembiowski, Rob Clearfield, Bethany Hamilton, Matt Ulery, David Onderdonk, Melissa Bach, Ronnie Malley, Jan Maksin, Gabriel Datcu, Yang Wei, Clarinet Quartet plus students from School of Music at the Paderewski Symphony Orchestra, Andrzej Krukowski, Janet Ulrich Brooks and the Frederic Chopin Polish School, among others.
The special guests of the festival will be international jazz pianist: Andrzej Jagodzinski from Poland and Magdalena Stern-Baczewska from NY.

Singer, composer, arranger, and producer Grazyna Auguscik has won the praise and admiration of music critics, jazz enthusiasts and even non-jazz audiences with a singular voice that speaks a universal language.
She is one of the most intriguing contemporary vocalists on today’s World jazz scene. Her elusive style challenges traditional definitions of jazz and show vocalist and musician without boundaries. Her unorthodox approach to rewriting classic works is at once a tribute to its authors as well as an adventure into uncharted territory. Her originals give a fresh taste of uncanny flavor.
Her professional music career She began in Europe, completed her studies in 1992 at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, and has since become a prolific collaborator shearing the stage with such jazz notables as Jim Hall, Michael and Randy Brecker, Toots Thielemans, Urszula Dudziak, John Medeski, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Michal Urbaniak, Terry Callier and many others.
Since 1994, Grazyna has made Chicago her home where she performs at the legendary Green Mill, the Chicago Cultural Center, the Millennium Park, to named just few.
Amidst her active schedule of Worldwide performances, Grazyna has managed to record, produce and distribute 18 albums, 10 under her own record label, GM A Records, and appearing on as many projects as a guest.
In 2011 she received the Outstanding Pole Aboard award from the Teraz Polska foundation, and the annual award of the Polish Ministry of Culture.
